1,900-year-old coins from Jewish revolt against the Romans discovered in the Judaen desert

Image
Four coins dating back almost 1,900 years, to when the Jewish people launched a revolt against the Roman Empire, have been discovered in the Judaean desert . The coins were found in the Mazuq Ha-he'teqim Nature Reserve, which is located in the West Bank. They date to the time of the Bar Kokhba revolt (A.D. 132 to 135), when the Jewish people rose up against the Roman Empire . Although the revolt had some initial success, the Romans' counterattack resulted in mass slaughter. "Five hundred and eighty thousand men were slain in the various raids and battles, and the number of those that perished by famine, disease and fire was past finding out … thus nearly the whole of Judaea was made desolate," Roman historian Cassius Dio wrote in his book "Roman History " (translation by Earnest Cary). While the accuracy of the death toll he gives is a matter of some debate, there is no doubt that it was very high and many caves where refugees hid from the Roman arm...

1,500-year-old burial with stacked bones discovered during sewer system dig in Mexico

Archaeologists in Mexico have uncovered a 1, 500-year- old burial of human remains, whose bones were stacked , possibly as part of a ritual.   The pre-Hispanic discovery was made during a sewer system construction project at Pozo de Ibarra in the western Mexican state of Nayarit, according to a translated statement from Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The burial contained one complete skeleton, along with human bones from other individuals. Some of the bones were intentionally stacked, and they were separated into different categories, with long bones like femurs (thigh bones) and tibias (lower leg bones) in one section and seven complete skulls in another, Claudia Servín Rosas , a field archaeologist with the INAH who led the excavation, said in the statement. An analysis revealed that all of the skulls belonged to men of various ages, with some of the specimens showing signs of cranial modification, which was frequently practiced in...

Remains of 7th-century Saxon town discovered under central London

Workers have uncovered the ruins of a Saxon town beneath The National Gallery in London, revealing that the centuries-old town was much larger than previously thought. The discovery was made during underground tunneling for ongoing redevelopment of the art museum, in celebration of its 200th anniversary. Upon alerting the authorities of the finding, archaeologists continued digging and unearthed a variety of artifacts, including a hearth, postholes, pits and leveling deposits, according to a statement from University College London, whose Archaeology South-East, a part of the UCL Institute of Archaeology , did the excavation. Radiocarbon dating of the hearth determined that it was from sometime between A.D. 659 and 774. The variety of holes and ditches pockmarking the site also offered a timeline of how different fence lines and property boundaries shifted over the centuries to encompass what was once the Saxon town of Lundenwic, which served as a waterfront trading center duri...

11,000-year-old submerged stone wall discovered off Germany was once used to trap reindeer

Image
An underwater stone wall discovered in the Baltic Sea near Germany was built about 11,000 years ago for hunting reindeer when the location was dry land, a new study indicates. The researchers suggest the local prehistoric people built the wall; its remaining parts were crafted from 1,670 stones and stretch about two-thirds of a mile (975 meters) long, stand 3 feet (1 m) tall and are 6.5 feet (2 m) wide. The team discovered the wall via sonar and dives to the location, which is at a depth of about 70 feet (21 m) and roughly 6 miles (10 kilometers) east of Rerik, Germany, in the Bay of Mecklenburg. The wall may be the largest of its kind from the early Holocene (11,700 years ago to present) in Europe, the researchers said in the study. Based on similar prehistoric walls — including the ancient " desert kites " found in the Middle East — the authors propose that it was built on dry land by hunter-gatherers to drive wild animal herds into corrals where they could be kil...

After 2,200 years, a Celtic woman was discovered buried inside a TREE “with fine garments and jewelry.”

Image
The ancient corpse of a woman buried in a hollowed-out tree in Zurich, Switzerland. Pictured are parts of her remains including her skull (top), as well as her jewellery (a blue, bottom) It’s believed the woman, who died 2,200 years ago, commanded great respect in her tribe, as she was buried in fine clothes and jewellery. Scientists say the woman was Celtic. The Iron Age Celts are known to have buried members of their tribe in “tree coffins” buried deep underground. The woman’s remains were found in the city of Zurich in 2017, according to Live Science. Bedecked in a fine woolen dress and shawl, sheepskin coat, and a necklace made of glass and amber beads, researchers believe she performed little if any hard labor while she was alive. It’s estimated she was around 40 years old when she died, with an analysis of her teeth indicating a substantial sweet tooth. Adorned in bronze bracelets and a bronze belt chain with iron clasps and pendants, this woman was not p...

Archaeologists excavating a site along with the Thames Tideway Tunnel—a massive pipeline nicknamed London’s “super sewer”—have гeⱱeаɩed the ѕkeletoп of a medieval man who ɩіteгаɩɩу dіed with his boots on. “It’s extremely гагe to discover any boots from the late 15th century, let аɩoпe a ѕkeletoп still wearing them,” says Beth Richardson of the Museum of London  Archaeology  (MOLA). “And these are very ᴜпᴜѕᴜаɩ boots for the period—thigh boots, with the tops, tᴜгпed dowп. They would have been exрeпѕіⱱe, and how this man саme to own them is a mystery. Were they secondhand? Did he ѕteаɩ them? A special operation by the Israel Antiquities аᴜtһoгіtу’s Robberies Prevention Unit and the Jerusalem Police has recovered hundreds of items in a гаіd on the home of a man ѕᴜѕрeсted of illegally trading in antiquities. Artifacts recovered in the гаіd and follow-up actions include bone and ivory objects dating to biblical times, as well as 1,500-year-old bowls inscribed with ѕрeɩɩѕ and chants in Hebrew. Antiquities inspectors also found hundreds of ancient coins, glass vessels, and weарoпѕ. The inscribed bowl was used as a sort of amulet in ancient times and dates back to 800-400 BCE. For the most part, these bowls were Ьᴜгіed beneath a home’s floor to protect the inhabitants. The insides of the bowls were inscribed with ѕрeɩɩѕ written concentrically, both in Hebrew and Aramaic. The words and sentences were intended to combat curses, dіѕeаѕe, and eⱱіɩ ѕрігіtѕ. Antiquities Robberies Prevention Unit director Amir Ganor said, “Bowls like these arrived from ancient sites i...

A 6.5-foot femur discovered in Australia has not yet been positively identified by archaeologists as either a prehistoric dinosaur bone or a elephant bones

Image
Dinosaur hᴜпteгѕ have uncovered a 6.5-foot thigh bone probably belonging to a ɡіаnt sauropod in France. The enormous femur was dug up in a fossil-rich area in Charente, and dates back 140 million years. Sauropods are the largest herbivorous dinosaurs known to date — and include diplodocus, brachiosaurus and brontosaurus They first appeared in the late Triassic Period, but this particular dino is from the Jurassic eга. It was discovered “пeѕtɩed” in a thick layer of clay by volunteers from the National Museum of Natural History. The bone itself weighs an іпсгedіЬɩe 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds) — just heavier than an average modern horse. And it was discovered alongside a ɡіаnt pelvis bone hidden within the same layer of clay. Charente is best known for the town of Cognac — home to the brandy — but it’s also a hotbed for foѕѕіɩѕ. Paleontologists have already uncovered around 7,500 bones from the site since 2010. It’s estimated that these bones are ɩіпked to as...

The “Megalodon” shark, one of the biggest and most ferocious sharks, was discovered 130 million years ago

Image
Not only was Megalodon the biggest prehistoric shark that ever lived; it was the largest marine predator in the history of the planet, vastly outweighing both the modern Great White Shark and ancient reptiles like Liopleurodon and Kronosaurus. Below you’ll find 10 fascinating facts about Megalodon. Since Megalodon is known by thousands of fossilized teeth but only a few scattered bones, its exact size has been a matter of contentious debate. Over the past century, paleontologists have come up with estimates, based mainly on tooth size and analogy with modern Great White Sharks, ranging from 40 to 100 feet from head to tail, but the consensus today is that adults were 55 to 60 feet long and weighed as much as 50 to 75 tons and some superannuated individuals may have been even bigger. Megalodon had a diet befitting an apex predator, feasting on the prehistoric whales that swam the earth’s oceans during the Pliocene and Miocene epochs, but also chowing down on dol...
