When did humans start wearing clothes?

As early humans evolved from ape-like ancestors, they came down from the trees, began to walk upright and lost their fur. But without fur, our ancestors would have been exposed to the elements. They would have needed clothing for protection. So when did humans start wearing clothes? This is a tricky question, because clothes don't survive the way artifacts made of stone, bone and other hard materials do. Instead, scientists have to get creative. The evidence used to answer this question comes from a few main sources, including bones bearing evidence of skinning, sewing needles and awls, and lice. Related: When did Homo sapiens first appear? "We tried to understand what changes have happened in lice evolutionary History that might be correlated with loss of body hair in humans , and then the subsequent acquisition of clothing use in humans ," David Reed , a biologist at the University of Florida, told Live Science . Lice are incredibly specialized to their habitats...

Did art exist before modern humans? New discoveries raise big questions.

For centuries, the "Unicorn Cave," or "Einhornhöhle," in central Germany has been famous for its many thousands of bones. In medieval times, people thought the bones came from unicorns. But a few years ago, archaeologists excavating the cave unearthed an unusual object: a toe bone from a giant deer. The material itself was noteworthy: Although giant deer were once prey for Europe's prehistoric hunters, the animals usually roamed much farther north, indicating this bone had been brought from afar. And it was clearly different from others in the cave: Several large grooves had been carved at angles into the bone's upper surface, creating a prominent chevron-like pattern. Even more extraordinary was its age: Radiocarbon dating of the bone showed that the deer lived around 51,000 years ago, when the Unicorn Cave was occupied by Neanderthals , our extinct human relatives. "The engraved bone from Einhornhöhle is at least 50,000 years old and thus range...

The ancient city of Teotihuacan has since been excavated and studied by archaeologists, many travelling from the US and around the world to learn about how the Aztecs once lived and ruled. One surprising discovery made beneath the largest pyramid in the city, the Pyramid of the Sun, was explored during Discovery’s short documentary, ‘Shocking Artefacts And Human Remains Found In 2000 Year Old Pyramid’. Here, archaeologists unearthed a tunnel in the bedrock, at first believing that it was a natural cave. . At the very end of the tunnel, they fund an elaborate chamber carved in the shape of a clover. Now, the tunnel lies empty, likely stripped of its contents by robbers over the centuries. But, the discovery under...

A human being or a hoax? – Archaeologists in Indonesia are terrified by a terrifying monster skeleton

Image
The jenglot is a creature found in Indonesia. It resembles a tiny human oid doll, and seems to be a creature from modern times, as the first reports of the jenglot’s existence were made in 1997. Till today, however, it is still unclear if the jenglot is really a supernatural creature or merely a hoax, though many Indonesians believe that the jenglot does have mystical powers. The jenglot is reported to have first mysteriously appeared in Indonesia, in particular, on the island of Java, in 1997. The creature can allegedly be found in all sorts of places, for instance, under the ground, in the trunk of trees, or even on the rooftops of houses. The jenglot is usually said to be several inches tall, and has the appearance of a tiny human being, though with sharp fangs, long nails, and long hair. This creature is sometimes considered to be a type of vampire as it feeds on blood – either animal or human . The owner of a jenglot has to provide it with drops of blood on a dail...
