Liverpool's Premier League record on the opening day

Liverpool were a part of Sports broadcasting History when they took on Nottingham Forest in the first ever Premier League match aired on Sky Sports at the start of the 1992/93 season.

However, a Teddy Sheringham goal condemned Graeme Souness' side to a 1-0 defeat which set the stage for a disappointing sixth place finish in the new competition's inaugural season.

Since then, though, Liverpool have often enjoyed themselves on the opening weekend of the Premier League season and are unbeaten in all their season openers under Jurgen Klopp.

Here's a rundown of their Premier League record on the opening day of the season.

Liverpool's defeat at the City Ground back in 1992 is just one of four opening-day defeats the Reds have suffered since the competition's inception.

Liverpool were next beaten by Chelsea to open up the 2003/04 campaign before Tottenham started their memorable 2009/10 campaign by toppling the Reds 2-1 at White Hart Lane. Without a doubt, though, Liverpool's most embarrassing opening day defeat arrived three years later when Brendan Rodgers' first Game in charge culminated in a 3-0 thumping at the hands of West Brom.

Generally, the Merseyside outfit have fared pretty well in their season openers and only Man Utd and Chelsea have got better opening day records. Liverpool have won 18 of their 31 games, drawing nine.

In terms of notable triumphs, their 4-3 victory at the Emirates in 2016 stands out with new signing Sadio Mane tearing apart the Arsenal backline. Marcelo Bielsa's unique and aggressive Leeds also gave the champions a run for their money at the start of the 2020/21 season when they went to Anfield on the opening weekend and picked up a moral victory in a 4-3 loss.

Those two triumphs arrived with Kiopp at the helm and the German is yet to taste defeat in an opening day Premier League fixture. He's won five and drawn two, with these games always being full of goals. Klopp's seven opening day fixtures with Liverpool have averaged a whopping 5.14 goals.
